project 2: ostriches

time: 2.5 weeks
These ostriches were created for the "Supper" section of Anthropologie. This section of the store sold primarily home goods such as plates, measuring cups, kitchenware, hand towels, aprons, kitchen gadgets, candles etc. The bulk of the form was created using chicken wire, which was then covered in paper and glue (just like in sculpture I & II for those who complain about it not being useful!). I created the plumage on the first ostrich by creating cones of paper at varying heights and by adding feathers, crumpled paper, and burlap to give extra texture. The Display Coordinator finished the head, beak, and feet. I looked at the ostriches in the San Francisco store (which is more or less the flagship store) and felt that ours matched the Anthropologie aesthetic of modern vintage much closer. Their feathers were very mechanical rectangles that had been cut with scissors in equal parallel lines to create a fringe. We used paper from vintage books and paper with brown washes whereas they seemed to have used photocopied paper. This was my favorite because it got the little kids who came into the store really excited, though some of them thought they were dinosaurs.
